Introduction

According to local legends, Nhatofo was the only person who lived on Tofo beach around the start of last century. She lived by collecting seashells and no one knew the tides and conditions of the ocean like she did, so the fishermen would consult her because she had powers that protect those entering the sea. When the Portuguese came to settle on this wonderful bay they called the beach by her name. One day she disappeared, and the community would hold a festival for her so that she could keep protecting their seafarers. With the war, the festivals stopped and since then many have drowned in this area, known as the Land of Good People.

Nhatofo Salva-Vidas (NSV) Association is a non-profit lifesaving association registered with the Provincial maritime authorities in Tofo, Mozambique since April 2016, and is the first and only local lifesaving association with the purpose to save lives and create safety awareness in the water. We chose the name Nhatofo so that she could once more make our beaches a safer place for everyone, and to date, Nhatofo Salvavidas saves an average of 40 people per year. We are very thankful to the Tofo residents who contribute and our sponsors who help maintain this public service, and we ask for your support to keep Tofo beach a safe place for all. Please consider donating.

Why?

Tofo is an international tourism destination for diving, water sports, and leisure, hosting around 100.000 visitors per year. Due to this, providing water safety and rescue services to all visitors and our resident community is essential to prevent loss of life and ensure water safety.

What?

Nhatofo Lifeguards Association was created by Tofo residents to provide water safety and rescue to all visitors and our local community. This is a free service provided to everyone and managed by our Association members, who hire and upskil lifeguards from the local community.

How?

Nhatofo has a management board of effective members who have specific roles, including training, operations, communication, and fundraising. Our lifeguards are sourced from the local community, trained, and upskilled to perform rescue and life saving procedures.
